Just plain scary

Under our house we have a crawl space that covers quite a bit of area, the front room, dining room, entry way, kitchen, breakfast nook, and one set of stairs. So all that means we have several vents with mesh screens covering them to keep the crawl space cool. We noticed one day the one of the vents were scratched out. Only giving it little thought we covered it thinking we will keep the unwanted wild animal out. The next day another one was scratched out. We called the animal wildlife who came out to set a trap for a raccoon or possum. On the first day we caught a young cat. We scared it hoping it wouldn't come back and then let it out. Later that day Bryan left on a business trip for several days. Well that night I heard something under the house, crying of some kind and then a faint meow. Great that was a momma cat and she had babies. Fantastic! I'm home alone and am totally freaked out now. I called Bryan who told me to open the vent and let the mom back in, so I did. Now I have a mom and her babies under the house. I will never be able to function knowing all this is going on. I called our friend Joe who came over about 10:30 that night and went under the house to snoop around. He came back empty handed, At 12:30 I peaked down the stairs to find the back door open (SCARY!!!) and then I heard the cats again. I called Joe again, and he came back about 30 min. later went straight under the house with a box and less then 10 minutes later he came out with 4 kittens. My neighbor knew a lady who rescued stray kittens so she came over with a trap for the mom. Until then we kept the kittens and bottle fed them, bathed them ('cuz they needed it), played with them, and even named them. We tried real hard to get the mom again but scaring her twice and taking her kittens I guess makes a cat disappear. We never got the mom but the kittens all went to go homes.
